I have seen a lot of posts lately (as it’s the family holiday season) about breaking generational trauma patterns and walking away from toxic family members.
And i absolutely agree with this. BUT. And this is a huge BUT.
First, try to see things from their point of view. Put yourself in their shoes and forgive them their mistakes. Understand that THEY are traumatized too. They are wounded, they are hurting and they need love, not more hate.
With that said. Sometimes we need to put up boundaries…. And if those still aren’t respected, walking away is a very self loving and healing choice…
BUT…
If you can not walk away from the situation with love, understanding and forgiveness in your soul then you are still not free.
Not free from the relationship, not free from the hurt or trauma you have yourself or free from continuing to hurt others with your anger and resentment.
I have more than once felt that walking away from a relationship-family or otherwise- was the right choice for me. But if I couldn’t do it with love and compassion in my heart for them it was not over, I was not healed and there was more work to do…
just remember, blaming others (and walking away) does nothing to solve our problems, but becoming aware of the patterns and shifting them helps everyone.
So even if you choose to sit this one out… do it with love and respect for everyone, including yourself
